Official rules to follow

Face occupies 70-80% of photo height (children: 50-80%; minor deviations allowed up to age 10)
Children up to age 6: further exceptions for head position, expression and eye visibility
Head centred and straight, neutral expression, mouth closed, looking straight into camera
Evenly lit, no reflections, no red eye; sharp and high contrast; true-to-life colours
No retouching or filters; head coverings only for religious reasons (face visible from chin to forehead)
SINCE 1 MAY 2025 (domestic applications): paper photos no longer accepted. Photo must be taken at the Bürgeramt (PointID, 6.00 EUR) or by a registered photo service provider who uploads it to a secure cloud and gives a Data-Matrix code
Applications abroad (embassies/consulates): conventional paper photos 45 x 35 mm portrait, no border, still accepted until missions have their own capture devices

Can I take my Germany Reisepass / Personalausweis photo at home?

Yes. Stand facing a window for soft, even light, keep a neutral expression and have someone take the photo from about 1.2 m (4 ft) away at eye level. Upload it above — we crop it to the exact size and replace the background automatically.

How do I print it?

Download the 4×6 inch print sheet and order a standard 4×6 (10×15 cm) print at a pharmacy or photo kiosk. Make sure it prints at 100% size (no "fit to page"), then cut out the photos along the guide lines.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection and background removal run in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.

Will my photo be accepted?
